Southmeadow Cottages is located on Boyden Lake in Perry, Maine.  We’re in the most Northeastern part of the United States, an area we call Way Down East.  Calais, Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick are 16 miles to our North, and Eastport is 12 miles to the East.

The business began when my grandfather, Charles E. Brown built the original cottages over 70 years ago for friends from Eastport to come to in the summers.  The family relocated from Eastport to the lake in 1914, where they spent that first winter in a log cabin.  This original structure was incorporated into a larger structure (the main house) built the following spring.  My grandfather kept 15 hives of bees, had over 500 apple trees and raised plants in a greenhouse on the property, in addition to being a master woodworker and photographer.  We have preserved over 500 of his glass plate negatives and many of the images of the early times at the lake are available for viewing.  There is a large formal flower garden in addition to several smaller ones around the main house and the pond out in front is full of water lilies.  Campers are welcome to come up to enjoy the flowers and sit and visit with my mother, Alice (90) and her sister Ruth (92), who grew up in the house and will tell you many stories of their pioneering childhood.
